Colin
Bather died suddenly on New Year’s Day 1996 after a day spent enjoying one of
his favourite sports – skiing – at Verbier in
He joined Sea Containers in September 1977 as a
General Manager in the CCC Division, having been President of the Hotel
Cipriani in
Subsequently – in 1981 – he was asked to assume
responsibility for Sea Containers’ other leisure interests which at that time
included Harry’s Bar in Mayfair, London, the Fairways and Swinford travel
agency, and the restoration of the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express. Later, as Vice President Orient Express
Hotels, he was involved not meely in the acquisition of all the Group’s
prestigious hotels, but the successful reintroduction of the VSOE, all of which
owed much to his dedication and expertise.
Colin retired from Sea Containers at the end of
1991. He will be deeply missed by all
his ex-colleagues who so greatly admired and respected him.
Our
sympathies in their loss go out to his wife Valerie and children Alexander and
Victoria.
