COMIC VERSE

It was in the late 'forties or early 'fifties that I produced a series of satirical verses based on items in the news for my club's wall newspaper.  I have not kept a record of them, but some have lodged in the recesses of my memory.   Of the verses below, the first four fall into that category.  Swan Song mourned the loss of the Ashes at the end of a cricket test series against Australia.  The Big Umpteen (much longer than reproduced here, but, alas, the rest of it forgotten) was a comment on a Big Five (or Six?) Conference to shape the future of Europe.  Lassie Come Home followed an amusing divorce proceedings in the USA (where else?), and Doctor Redux arose from a suggestion in a Government Green Paper that doctors should be obliged to return to their studies on a regular basis in order to keep up with new medical developments.
