Bryan Forbes

Bryan was Vice-President of the TV and Screenwriters' Guild (later renamed simply as The Screenwriters' Guild) when I was a member in the 1950s, Ted Willis being the President.

He was a delightful person to meet at the monthly Guild encounters.  Even more pleasurable were the occasions when his beautiful wife, the actress Nanette Newman, was also present.

The great thing about these Guild encounters was that everyone, regardless of rank or seniority, was totally approachable and we were all on first-name terms.

At that time I was in the euphoric state of constant creativity and invention, having not yet suffered the disappointment of production company rejections, and it was reassuring to be able to discuss one's work with people who had already achieved success in this area.  The mere act of "brushing against" someone like Bryan Forbes was enough to inspire confidence and help foster the type of collaboration with others that is described elsewhere in these pages.
