Dedication This book is dedicated to its two earliest influences: To Rita Coleman, my first serious romantic relationship, the break-up of which caused me to embark on a frenetic orgy of poetic invention that relieved an otherwise desolate period of National Service in the Royal Engineers. And to Stella Blend, whose kind and devoted criticism of my early works during that period effectively encouraged my attention to details that might otherwise have been fatally ignored. Within these pages I shall make occasional reference to both of these wonderful women and identify their influence.
